Deputy Chief of Mission
Carol Urban
Carol Urban arrived in Santiago in September 2007. Previously, from 2004-07, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland.
Ms. Urban is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor. She joined the U.S. Information Agency in 1975 after graduate study at the University of Maryland. She held several senior management positions at USIA including in the Bureau of American Republics Affairs and the Bureau of Asia and Pacific Affairs, and as Executive Director of USIA's Resources Management Committee.
During her career at USIA, Ms. Urban served abroad in Moscow (1986-89), Madrid (1992-95) and Bonn (1998-1999). Following the merger of USIA and the Department of State, her Foreign Service assignments have included Berlin (1999-2001) and a second tour in Madrid (2001-04).
Ms. Urban speaks Spanish and has studied German and Russian. She has received numerous awards during her career including Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards from USIA and the Department of State.
A native New Yorker, Ms. Urban grew up on Long Island. She is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University where she majored in Spanish language and literature. Ms. Urban is married to Richard Gilbert, a retired USIA Foreign Service Officer.
